Bhubaneswar, 16 June-2014, Priyabrata Nayak: A major fire broke out at State Panchayati Raj department located inside the Secretariat completely gutting the main office here on Monday, fire brigade official said.
Though no casualties were reported in this incident but almost all the important files, furniture and computers were gutted in the fire. The gutted office belongs to the private secretary to the Panchayati Raj department Secretary.
Staffs were first to detect thick smoke was bellowing from the private secretary’s chamber. Soon after the fire brigade rushed to the spot and doused the fire. By then several important files, furniture, computers and other office stationeries were charred in the fire.
“Primary investigation reveals the mishap was caused by electric short circuit. It was very much late until we reached the spot. But some we have managed to brought the fire under control” said Ramesh Chandra Majhi, Assistant Fire Officer, Bhubaneswar.
On condition of anonymity some staffs of the department said this building was an old one inside the secretariat campus and its interior condition has become fire prone. The electric wirings and fittings have not been maintained properly and it could be fall prey to fire mishap.
“Unlike other departments this building lacks firefighting equipments. Similarly no survey or initiative not been carried out to tackle such mishaps. Moreover this building skips all the basic amenities for firefighting which it must have,” said an employee of the said department.
A major fire broke out at Rajiv Bhavan, an annexure building of the Odisha Secretariat, completely gutting the conference hall of water resources department on April 27 last year.
