11 June-2014, MARK BERMAN/WSP: The gunman who shot and killed a student Tuesday at an Oregon high school has been identified as a 15-year-old freshman at the school, police said.
The shooter, Jared Michael Padgett, rode the school bus to Reynolds High School in Troutdale, Ore., on Tuesday morning, police said. He went into a locker room and shot and killed Emilio Hoffman, 14, a freshman at the school, according to authorities.
Police haven’t found any link yet between the gunman and Hoffman, Troutdale Police Chief Scott Anderson said during a briefing with reporters on Wednesday morning.
After shooting Hoffman, the gunman fired at teacher Todd Rispler, Anderson said. Rispler was grazed on his hip and went to the school’s office so that the school could begin a lockdown.
As the gunman made his way through the school’s hallway, he encountered police officers who were arriving at the school. He then went into a small restroom and fatally shot himself, Anderson said.
The shooter was carrying an AR-15 rifle, a semiautomatic handgun, a large knife and nine loaded magazines capable of holding hundreds of bullets, Anderson said. In addition, he was wearing a vest used to carry ammunition and other items, as well as a helmet with a camouflage design.
“Given the weapons and the amount of ammunition the shooter was carrying, the early notification and law enforcement response was critical,” Anderson said.
The guns that Padgett was carrying were all taken from his family’s home, Anderson said. “The weapons had been secured, but he defeated the security measures,” Anderson said.
Anderson did not disclose any possible motivation for the shooting.
