Patna, 2 June-2014( TNN): Patna mayor Afzal Imam will face a no-confidence motion on June 10, the day when he completes two years in office. Ward number 28 councillor and opposition leader Vinay Kumar Pappu has charged the mayor with failure to fulfil the promises made to locals for providing at least basic amenities in the city.
Commenting on the move, the mayor told TOI, “If my opponents had their way, they would have moved a no-confidence motion against me just two days after I took charge. However, the Bihar Municipal Act didn’t allow that. I appreciate they waited for so long to take this step and welcome the motion. I am sure to stay in power.”
Pappu said, “The mayor has miserably failed to improve basic amenities in the city. Patna is full of garbage and people face drinking water problem, pre-monsoon waterlogging and lack of public toilets. Most of the proposed schemes, including that of solid waste management, construction of waste processing unit at the dumping yard of Bariya Chak and purchase of equipment for door-to-door garbage collection have not materialized. The mayor passed a scheme of constructing 72 water tanks, one in each ward, but recently informed the board that the civic body has space only for 18. The construction of parking lots and repair and maintenance of street lights is still pending.”
The PMC’s empowered standing committee (ESC) had okayed as many as 235 schemes and the board had okayed 71 schemes. “If you ask about the work done, it will be less than 10%,” said Pappu.
Defending himself, the mayor said, “As a mayor, I only have the power of introducing and okaying a proposal or scheme. It is PMC commissioner’s duty to get the work carried out.
