Darbhanga, 30 May-2014, TNN: The bodies of four labourers, Fakira Sahni, Uchit Sahni, Mahabir Sahni and Deepak Mahto continue to remain crushed under the fallen garter of an under-construction bridge at Akraha village under Hayaghat block in Darbhanga district, which collapsed on Wednesday and partially fell into river Kareh.
The accident took place on Wednesday when the heavy garter fell on the bodies of the four labourers after which it partially fell into the river. The labourers belonged to Akraha. The locals on Thursday staged a protest demanding the extrication of the bodies. The angry mob even torched one JCB machine and a tractor on the construction site belonging to the agency constructing the bridge. The employees of the agency have also vanished from the site. The bridge is being constructed by the CPWD through the agency.
A 20-member team of state disaster response force (SDRF) led by inspector Kapildev Prasad has also arrived on the site for rescue operation. Prasad said that unless a heavy crane is provided by the district administration for lifting the heavy garter, the bodies, if lying crushed, cannot be extricated. A large quantity of water hyacinth flowing over the garter is being removed.
The mob even blocked the railway track passing by the side of accident site forcing Danapur-Jaynagar Intercity Express to stop at Hayaghat railway station for two hours. Only when a team of RPF arrived from Samastipur, the movement of the train resumed. A visit to the accident site revealed that Darbhanga district administration is either helpless or unable to provide a big crane for lifting the heavy garter/span.
Only one small crane was sent which could not lift the garter. Only Darbhanga SDO Kari Prasad Mahto was found sitting at the accident site with police force.
