Baleswar, 29 May-2014: Indigenously developed Pinaka rockets were today successfully test fired thrice from a multi-barrel rocket launcher from a DRDO base in Chandipur-on-sea in Odisha’s Baleswar district.
Defence sources said three rounds of Pinaka rockets were successfully test fired from the Proof and Experimental Establishment at Chandipur.
Pinaka has been inducted into the armed forces and the present trials were conducted with some improvements in the system, sources said while revealing that some more tests are likely to be conducted.
Sources said the rockets with a strike range of 40 km and capable of acting as a force-multiplier, were developed to supplement artillery guns.
The quick reaction time and high rate of fire of the system can give an edge to the Army during a low-intensity conflict situation, sources added.
