New Delhi, 27 May-2014: The Election Commission (EC) has decided to hold biennial elections for the one casual vacant seat of Rajya Sabha on the 19th of next month in order to fill the vacancy. There are 9 casual vacancies in the Council of States from various States.
It should be noted that barely a month after election of senior BJD leader A U Singhdeo to Rajya Sabha, party supremo and Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik announced his candidature from Bolangir assembly seat replacing party’s earlier nominee in the face of protest by party workers. Incidentaly he lost the Assembly election.

The holding of the bye election to fill up the vacancy of (late) Dr. N. Janardhana Reddy from Andhra Pradesh will be considered after the Chairman of the Council of States decides as to which State i.e. Telangana or Andhra Pradesh, the said vacancy pertains as per sub clause (ii) of the First Schedule to the Andhra Pradesh Re-organization Act, 2014.
