Bhubaneswar, 26 May-2014: Senior BJD leader Niranjan Pujari today officially elected as Speaker of Odisha Assembly unopposed. His election to the post of the Speaker of Odisha Assembly officially declared by the pro term Speaker V. Sugnana Kumari Deo.
Fifty-three-year-old Pujari was re-elected from the Sonepur Assembly constituency in the recent polls. He was a Cabinet Minister in the State from 2011-14.Pujari was the lone contender for the post.
Mr. Pujari was elected unopposed as the opposition parties had not proposed the name of any candidate for the post. Mr. Pujari’s name was proposed by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and the same was seconded by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Bikram Keshari Arukh in the presence of pro tem Speaker V. Sugnana Kumari Deo. Mr. Pujari, who was first elected to the Assembly in 2000 as an independent and second time as a Biju Janata Dal candidate in 2004, 2009, was re-elected in the recent election on a BJD ticket.
The Chief Minister, a host of legislators, and Congress Leader Taraprasad Bahinipati, BJP leader Durodhana Majhi greeted Mr. Pujari on his election to the Speaker post.
