Mumbai, 23 May-2014: Mamta Kulkarni, the sultry Bollywood actress who shot to fame with her topless cover shoot for Stardust magazine in 1993 and worked with all the leading actors in Hindi films, remained among top stars of that era. Mamta suddenly disappeared from the showbiz. After more than a decade of living in isolation, the actress has revealed in an interview that she turned to meditation and did not even tell her parents where she has been living all these years. With Mamta’s interview, the question of many missing Bollywood starlets has come to the fore.
On an average, Bollywood welcomes almost one new actor every day- be it a total newbie, a model who wants to work in films, a Southern actor who tries his hand in the Hindi film industry, a beauty pageant queen who is showered with film offers, an assistant director who wishes to be a mainstream lead actor, a star kid waiting for his perfect launchpad and now, even a pornstar who looks at Bollywood as an interesting money-minting opportunity!
But most people fail to notice that the number of people entering Bollywood is directly proportional to the number of actors and actresses who have suddenly disappeared from the film industry. It’s almost like they came, they worked, we blinked and they vanished, without informing anyone about their exit.
There are numerous actors, hot babes, comedians, supporting actors who were once popular faces, but now, are nowhere to be seen. It’s not like they have now descended to the small screen, rather they have kept themselves away from the cameras totally – in a way that nobody is able to trace where they are.
Here’s our list of some of the popular Bollywood faces who are now, as we said, MISSING!
Kim was the cute girl-next-door who initially began her career with television commercials and shot to fame being tagged as the Pepsi girl and the Cadbury girl.
Still known as the Aashiqui (1990) actress, Annu failed to make it big after her debut. She later delivered nude scenes in a short film and also a few steamy scenes in the South film industry.
In 1999, she met with a terrible accident and was in coma for 29 days. She took to yoga after recovering and is now a yoga instructress in Breach Candy, a posh neighbourhood in south Bombay.
She became a household name post her album AGHA. Salma entered Bollywood with the film Nikah. The Muslim actress is still remembered for her lead role. Post her debut, she also turned to singing. But after a few of her songs failed to garner nothing more than a lukewarm response, she vanished without any announcement.
The Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander actress who worked in the film opposite Aamir Khan shot to fame with the film in 1992. Her song ‘Pehla Nasha’ is a quintessential evergreen romantic single. Ayesha’s career began to fall post her breakup with the then rumoured boyfriend Armaan Kohli, who was also an actor. Ayesha did a few roles in the 1990s, but after that, completely lost her track in Bollywood.
Deven Verma’s rib-tickling comic timing roles in makes him one of the most remembered comedians. His roles in ‘Kisi Se Na Kehna’ and ‘Angoor’ made him a household name.
The quintessential supporting actress who once tickled everyone’s funny bone with her plump self in as many as 125 films, is now missing in Bollywood films. She is one of the most remembered actresses of the film industry.
He’s worked in as many as 450 films in his four-decade long career.
Ahead of his Bollywood career, Khan was a civil engineer. He was last seen in ‘Deshdrohi’ in 2008 before he gave up his film career.
He was quite a popular actor in the early ‘90s. He was the son of movie producer Brij Sadanah who shot dead his family and himself in a fit of rage in 1990. After roles in a few movies, Kamal got married an quit acting.

Known as the Jaanam Samjha Karo girl, Helen Brodie, then a model, did a cameo in the Govinda-starrer Hadh Kar Di Aapne. However, it was her role in Jug Mundhra’s flick Monsoon that got her many eyeballs. Post a raunchy role in that flick, she went missing.
It is being said that she got married after this, but much has not been known about her beyond this.
She was the seductress in many Bollywood films and got fame mainly because of her sultry image in most of her filmi projects. She was perhaps last seen in a comedy with Riteish Deshmukh and Shreyas Talpade. Koena was said to have got a nose job done that reportedly failed to enhance her looks, and she got tagged as the perfect example of a cosmetic surgery gone haywire.
She debuted in Papa Kehte Hain many, many years ago. But post that film, though she earned overnight fame for her cute looks and innocent charm, she failed to bag interesting movies and meaningful roles. After a few duds at the Box Office, she was missing from Bollywood.
Popularly known for the song ‘Teri Jawani badi mast mast hai’, Anjala Zaveri debuted opposite Akshay Khanna in Himalayputra. Her second movie was Betaabi following which she switched to South Indian cinema. After working with many popular South stars like Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna and Venkatesh, she retired from acting.
At 17, she won the Miss India contest. In 1982, she debuted in Painter Babu. In 1983, she shot to fame with Hero opposite Jackie Shroff. Post numerous films, especially Ghatak, in 1997, that made her second only to Sridevi, she vanished. Sheshadri is happily married and currently living in Texas.
Another Miss India (1993) who came to Bollywood, Namrata Shirodkar debuted with Salman in ‘Jab Pyaar Kissi Se Hota Hai’. She also acted in ‘Vastav’ opposite Sanjay Dutt. She worked as a supporting actor in many films, following her wedding with Tollywood star, Mahesh Babu, after which she quit acting.
Negar too shot to fame by starring in many music videos. Known for her sultry image, she a few blink-and-miss roles in movies like ‘Rudraaksh’ and ‘Shaadi Ka Laddoo’ before she was deported back to Norway for forging her documents for work visa.
Rahul Khanna got talked about his intimate scenes with Nandita Das in Deepa Mehta’s ‘Earth’. The actor describes himself as a ‘Boutique Bollywood Actor’ on his Twitter page.
For those who didn’t know, he’s Vinod Khanna’s son. Rahul worked in films like ‘Bollywood Hollywood’ and a few more Bollywood projects. He was last seen in ‘Love Aaj Kal’ as Deepika Padukone’s husband.
After which, he’s vanished from showbiz.
Rahul Roy is stil remembered for his Blockbuster entry into the film industry with ‘Aashiqui’. The film made him an overnight star. Six months after ‘Aashiqui’, he was showered with film scripts and he reportedly signed about 40 films at that time. However, most films were shelved. He got a Best Actor nomination at the 1992 Filmfare Awards for his role in ‘Junoon’. After this, his films ‘Meri Aashiqui’ (2005) and ‘Naughty Boy’ (2006) did not do well at the Box Office, and he vanished! Rahul was seen, after many years, in ‘Bigg Boss’ in 2006 where he emerged as a winner.
She kickstarted her career by starring in music videos of Euphoria and many other singers. After which, she moved onto Bollywood. Many movies and many flops later, she was nowhere to be seen.
Sadashiv Amrapurkar’s role as an eunuch in 1991 film ‘Sadak’ made him a quintessential villain. His first brush with Bollywood was in the critically acclaimed film ‘Ardh Satya’. After playing villian for as many as 10 years, he switched to comedy, and is missing ever since.
Shabana Raza aka Neha
Shabana, popularly known as Neha, started her career opposite Bobby Deol in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Kareeb. The starlet soon earned the image of a cute and pretty actress. But after Kareeb, she failed to impress in all her films. A few flops later, she vanished.
Years after missing from the film industry, it emerged that she had married Bollywood actor Manoj Bajpayee. The couple had thier first child a couple of years ago. While Manoj continues to act, Neha keeps herself strictly away from the prying eyes of the media.
A Miss India of 1985, Sonu worked in Rakesh Roshan’s blockbuster Khoon Bhari Maang in 1988. Her sizzling swimming pool shot with Kabir Bedi, shot her to instant fame. A few random roles in television serials later, she turned missing.
Model turned actress, she got her break in Bollywood courtesy Sunil Dutt who discovered her. She debuted with B-grade film ‘Yeh Aag Kab Bujhegi’ and went on to act in many more films like Pyaar Ka Saaya, Boyfriend etc. When her career bombed in Bollywood, she flew down south. And since then, she stopped acting altogether.
