Patna, 17 May-2014, AIR: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar resigned on Saturday, a day after the JD-U’s Lok Sabha election rout in the state, according to TV reports.
The Janata Dal-United’s won only two of the 40 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar. In 2009, it won 20 seats when it was in alliance with the BJP.
Speculations are rife that the Nitish Kumar government in Bihar may fall as party legislators would desert him following the JD-U’s humiliating debacle in the elections.
It is the first time that voices of dissent have surfaced over poor performance and have also questioned Nitish Kumar’s leadership.
After the BJP, its ally LJP on Saturday demanded the resignation of the Bihar CM.
“Nitish Kumar should resign soon on moral grounds after the major debacle of his party in the polls,” LJP parliamentary board chairman Chirag Paswan said. Actor-turned-politician Chirag is son of LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan.
“It is clear Nitish Kumar has lost the confidence of the people,” Chirag, who won from Jamui, said.
