Nangarhar, 14 May-2014(CNN): A U.S. drone strike Wednesday morning killed at least 10 militants and injured 14 in eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistani border, a Pakistani military official said.
The attack in the Nazyan district of Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province targeted the Taliban-affiliated Lashkar-e-Islam militant group, Taliban members and smugglers, according to local officials and militants in Afghanistan.
The drone struck three areas in Nazyan, and one attack was 1 to 2 miles (2 to 3 kilometers) from the Pakistani border, said Haroon Zarghoon, a spokesman of a separate armed resistance movement, Hizb-e-Islami Afghanistan.
Zarghoon said Hizb-e-Islami fighters in the region told him that the targets included smugglers who had been using an alternate route for bringing goods to Pakistan on foot.
Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province borders Pakistan’s loosely governed tribal region.
