Meerut, 10 May-2014(Kohram Daily): Amid ongoing electioneering, communal riot broke out in Meerut on Saturday. According to reports, one person has died in the incident while 50 others have sustained injuries.
The incident took place over setting up of a public drinking facility in the Gudari Bazar locality of the city when two groups got engaged in a brawl. Five companies of Uttar Pradesh Provincial Armed Constabulary have been deployed to control the situation. Tension still prevails in the area, reports say.
The unfortunate incident started at around 2.30 pm when the two sides started pelting stones against each-other and several sops and vehicles were burnt.
Furious crowd also surrounded District Magistrate and City SP who had rushed to the spot and tried to attack them. The police force present there rescued them and took away safely. The report also said taht the crowd also beat up a Sub-Inspector.
Earlier on Friday, tensions sparked in the neighbouring Muzaffarnagar after a student of class ten was shot dead by some youths in a mobile shop. Furious over the killing of Uvais, locals blocked road traffic, police said.
One person was arrested in connection with the killing of the student while another, allegedly involved in the crime, was absconding.
Senior police officers rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control. Adequate police personnel were deployed in the area as a precautionary measure.
