9 May-2014, Abhijit Saha: Today Vedanta Resources Plc (VED.L) has said that it will not mine bauxite from the Niyamgiri hills in the state of Odisha until they receive the permission from the local communities.
The declaration denotes a win for the local communities as they have been opposing from a long time against the plan of the company to mine bauxite in an area that they believe to be holy.
Vedanta said that it was working with the government of Odisha and seeking various other alternatives to source bauxite for its alumina refinery in Odisha.
The proposed bauxite mining project had drained the resentment of rights groups globally. The project is planned close to the Lanjigarh refinery in the district of Kalahandi. This site is about 450 km from the capital of Odisha.
