Bhubaneswar, 8 May-2014, Abhijit Saha: 4 Left parties in the state of Odisha – SP, CPI, CPI (M) and Forward Bloc in a joint articulation have said that they would not permit Posco to utilize water implied for farmers and utilized for drinking by the people of undivided Cuttack region.
The proclamation signed by Rabi Behera of SP, Dibakar Nayak of CPI, Janardan Pati of CPI (M) and Purnachandra Padhi of Forward Bloc said that the government of Odisha in the year 2006, had withdrawn its decision to permit 125 cusec of water from Naraj in River Mahanadi.
CPI leader Dibakar Nayak said that earlier in 2006, the government of Odisha had advised Posco to arrange water for its utilization in perspective of open turbulence. Presently after 2014 polls, the government of Odisha has again permitted Posco to draw water from River Mahanadi.
Janardan Pati said that permitting Posco to draw water from River Mahanadi would disturb the system in Cuttack, Puri, Jajpur, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur regions.
In the same way, the farmers of Raghunathpur, Balikuda, Tittol, Cuttack sadar, Ersama, Jagtsinghpur and Biridi might be influenced if Posco draws water from River Hansua, he said.
In the mean time, Water Resources Secretary Suresh Chandra Mohapatra have said that Posco is permitted to draw water from River Hansua for construction of its mega project close to Paradip and water from Mahanadi for utilization in the steel plant.
