Bhubaneswar, 7 May-2014, Abhijit Saha: The department of Health and Family Welfare has decided to set up a bone bank at the Sriram Chandra Bhanja Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack city. The proposed bone bank will be the first such unit in eastern India and the 5th in the nation.
The said Health Secretary Pradipta Kumar Mohapatra said that currently there are just four bone banks located in four prominent hospitals of the nation. Those are in AIIMS at New Delhi, CMC at Chennai, Ganga Hospital at Coimbatore and Tata Memorial hospital at Mumbai. Ha has made these statements today while heading a high level meeting to discuss regarding the setting up of the bone bank at Cuttack.
Authorities have said that the bone bank would store bones that are duly processed for utilization in the future by the patients suffering from different types of illness including bone cancer, trauma or other severe infection. The processed bones could be stored for 3 years duration.
Mr. Mohapatra has said that the equipments needed for the bone bank would cost almost Rs 25 lakhs. He said that the bone bank unit would be operated by the assistant professors and associate professors of orthopaedic department of SCB Medical College Hospital. They have recently been trained in hand surgery and joint replacement at Tata Memorial hospital at Mumbai. Those having previous experience of working in bone banks would also be involved to operate the unit.
