State Government Asks OSACS To Submit Report On Blood Selling

The Health minister of Odisha Dr Damodar Rout has asked OSACS to submit a report regarding the sale of blood plasma to Reliance Life Sciences within a period of three days.

The Blood scam came to the limelight after publication of media reports on Central Blood Bank at Cuttack that it resorted to secret sale of blood plasma units to a private firm Reliance Life Science at a price of Rs 200 per unit. The private company was allegedly selling the blood plasma units at an excessively high price between Rs 1,400 and Rs 1,500 per unit in the open market causing misery to the poor and needy patients.

The District Collector of Cuttack has also asked the ADM to investigate in the matter of sale of plasma by Cuttack Central Blood Bank.

In its council meeting held on 29th May, OSACS had decided to sale the blood plasma units stacked in the blood banks after meeting the local demands. All most all the Government run Blood Bank Officers had also attended the meeting.

As per reports, the BLOs were asked to sale the plasma units to the private agencies dealing with blood business at Rs 200 per unit. This step to sell the blood plasma was taken to create revenue for better operation of Blood Banks. Nevertheless, the activists who were involved in the donation of blood had asked the authorities of Blood Bank to sell blood at lower prices to private firms since there has been acute shortage of blood in the State.
