NEW DELHI(PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the "poster boy for broken promises", Congress alleged…
NEW DELHI: Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, who returned to India from vacation on Tuesday, attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over demonetization, saying that for the first time in history, a Prime Minister of India was being ridiculed the world over.
Addressing a national convention of the Congress party, in the absence of party president Sonia Gandhi, Rahul said, “BJP, RSS and Narendra Modi have weakened institutions like RBI. First time in history Prime Minister of India is being ridiculed. The institution, the financial bedrock of the country has been ridiculed. The position of the RBI Governor has been ridiculed,” he said.
Stating that the BJP and the PM were in the habit of asking what the Congress had done in the last 70 years, Rahul said, “People of the country understand the blood and tears that our leaders have given for this country. I can name state after state where Congress workers and leaders have sacrificed their sweat and blood.”
Targeting Modi over demonetization, Rahul said, “Prime Minister says he wants to transform India. Prime Minister needs to spend some time with the poor, farmers of the country and ask them why suddenly people were running to villages?”
“He needs to go and ask why MNREGA, which he criticised in Parliament, is in demand,” Rahul added.
Stating that the people of the country were wondering when ‘acche din’ will come, Rahul added, “I will tell them it will come when Congress comes to power again in 2019.”
“Two and half years ago, PM Modi asked everyone to join Swacch Bharat, the drama continued for a few days. Then Make in India, Skill India. Automobiles sales have dropped by 60%. We have gone back 16 years,” he added.
Last time, the Congress vice president had presided over the party’s foundation day function on December 28 last and two months back, had chaired a meeting of the Working Committee in the absence of party chief Sonia Gandhi who was said to be unwell.
One of the highlights of the convention will be a resolution to condole the death of 100-odd people during the first 50 days of demonetization which had witnessed huge queues in front of banks and ATMs.
The party will also highlight the “anti-poor” and “anti-public” decisions of the Modi government over the last two-and-a-half years of its rule at the convention.
All the top Congress leaders, including CWC members, AICC delegates, PCC chiefs, MPs and MLAs from all the states have been invited to the meet which will see the party seeking to turn demonetization into a major issue in the upcoming polls.
