Lucknow, 28 April-2014, Piyush Srivastava: A day after blessing BJP candidate from Lucknow Rajnath Singh with victory, Congress veteran Narayan Dutt Tiwari did a ‘Ghajini’ to avoid doing the same with Congress candidate Rita Bahuguna Joshi. Tiwari, who is 88, looked at Joshi as if he had never seen her before when she went to his residence on Sunday to seek his blessings for victory.
This is how the conversation went:
Tiwari: How can I help you?
Joshi: I am here for your blessings to win
Tiwari: What is your name?
Joshi: My name is Rita Bahuguna Joshi.
Tiwari: Which party do you represent?
Joshi: Dada, I am in Congress. You know me.
I had met you last month also. I thought that
since BJP’s Rajnathji had met you yesterday,
I should also take your blessings.
Tiwari: Did Rajnath meet me yesterday?
Tiwari: And did I also bless him?
Joshi: That is what he claims.
And so it went on. Tiwari kept Joshi at bay by asking such questions. He didn’t utter a single word till Joshi reminded him of his good old days with her father Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna. That amused Tiwari enough for him to issue an appeal on his letterhead in the evening, asking the voters of Lucknow to support Joshi.
It is common knowledge, however, that Tiwari has been angry with Congress president Sonia Gandhi because she denied a Lok Sabha poll ticket from Uttarakhand to his son Rohit Shekhar.
Tiwari had blessed Rajnath on Saturday, embracing him warmly, and running his hand over Singh’s head when the BJP president bowed before him in respect.
For those who know him, Tiwari won’t be able to get away under cover of advancing years. One Congress leader from the state said on condition of anonymity that Tiwari has very sharp memory. “But he often displays that can be called selective Ghajini syndrome or amnesia to prove that he is old enough to forget people. This is his style of entertaining himself. But he is still important in politics because he has once represented the Brahmin community of UP ,” said the leader.
