Lucknow, 26th January, Munawar Sultana: Indian ace shuttler Saina Nehwal beats PV Sindhu and wins the Syed Modi International Indian Grand Prix Gold title and $120,000 here on Sunday.
Saina hasn’t won any title in the last 15 months, since Denmark Open Super Series Premier in October 2012, and this finale lasted for 40 minutes and Saina won by 21-14, 21-17.
Saina Nehwal is the Indian top seed followed by PV Sindhu, former is the London Olympic bronze medalist and was defeated by Sindhu in Indian Badminton League in August 2013.
Akhilesh Yadav Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister was also present, and as it was Republic day, a national holiday, the Babu Banarasi Das Indoor stadium was packed.
Both Saina and Sindhu share the same coach Pullela Gopichand.
Saina World no. 9 started off well and took the lead in the first game with 5-0 and continued till Sindhu came back at 8-1, and played it right.
When Saina was taking lead by 11-5, Sindhu got her line smashes right and lead by 12-14. But Saina didn’t let her opponent to do so and lead again to 19-14.
However, PV Sindhu the World Championship bronze medalist came back strongly in the second game.
Sindhu in the second game lead with 4-0, but Saina was sure and aggressive and took the challenge and equalized the scoreline for 5-all.
Both the Champions played well and leveled the scoreline upto 9-all until Sindhu got a backhand smash at the net straight to her body, giving the lead to the Indian top seed for the first time in second game 10-9.
Saina got her shots and line smashes well and lead the second game for the win.Saina has eventually put a break for her 15 month title drought.
