Mahesh ‘Attack’ a victim of inter-gang rivalry: Police

Gulam Jeelani, Gurgaon: Police arrested one of the shooters accused of the murder of gangster Mahesh Attack

on Monday. Police said the arrested man is a member of a rival gang, confirming suspicions that Mahesh was killed last month because of inter-gang rivalry.
Police identified the accused as Vikas alias Polly, who was present with two others, including wanted man Kaushal, when Mahesh was shot dead. The shooting took place outside Mahesh’s office near Jharsa Chowk on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway on September 21.
“Vikas, who has been arrested, is a member of Kaushal gang and he confessed to the during questioning. He said he was present with Kaushal and the third shooter when Mahesh was shot dead. He fired two shots at Mahesh,” Sumit Kuhar, deputy commissioner of police (crime), said.
Vikas, who has been previously accused in cases under the Arms Act, is from Shahpur Jat village in Pataudi.
Wanted in more than a dozen cases of murder, robbery and theft, Kaushal is a parole-jumper who was jailed in Faridabad.
After the attack on September 21, police formed a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the killing. Police have already recovered the Mahindra XUV used by the attackers. The vehicle was stolen from Sector 9 in August. Police said the attackers used another vehicle, a Maruti Suzuki Swift, for conducting a recce for a week before the attack.
“Kasuhal got Mahesh killed out of inter-gang rivalry. The two were rivals for more than 10 years. The Swift car which was used for recce was not used by the attackers on the day of the shooting,” Kuhar said.
Mahesh, 34, suffered eight bullet injuries in the shooting and succumbed to his injuries at Medanta – The Medicity the same evening. Police had registered a case under sections 302 (murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections of the Arms Act at the Sector 40 police station.

Son of a former sarpanch of Jharsa village, Mahesh was involved in over 21 cases, including attempt to murder, extortion bids and thefts in Gurgaon.
