Chetna Yerunkar, Mumbai: Redrawing boundaries of all 227 wards has not only landed political leaders in
trouble, but is also likely to result in confusion among citizens. The ward numbers of the 2012 elections and administrative wards are changed.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has uploaded the new electoral maps on their official website http://www.mcgm.gov.in/ to accept suggestions and objections from October 5 to October 20. The civic body is yet to decide on a strategy to spread awareness about the delimitation exercise among citizens. For now, the civic body is banking on citizens to check the official website for details.
The civic body has created hyperlinks on new ward formations to enable the citizens to know their new ward boundaries and their new ward numbers, said civic officials. The BMC is also looking at informing citizens, while carrying out the voters’ list exercise. The final list of the changed ward will be published on the website after November 22. And while distributing the voter identity cards, the citizens will also be informed about their wards.
Sanjog Kabare, assistant municipal commissioner, involved with the process, said, “We have uploaded the new ward maps on the civic body’s official website and we will also reach out to the citizens on the new ward formations.”
The new ward formations have created confusion among various citizens’ groups in the city. Anandini Thakoor, chairperson of H-west federation, said, “The ward delimitation has landed many of the citizens in confusion and the civic body should make some serious efforts to explain us our new ward boundaries. They should put up the wards in the BMC ward offices and also announce the areas along with their new ward numbers in various citizens’ groups meetings.”
Ashoke Pandit, an activist of K-west ward, said, “We do not even know the new ward numbers, leave along suggesting or objecting on the new ward formations.
