MUMBAI: In a high-voltage drama, Barun Kashyap Bhuyan, an executive who had created an uproar over social media when he spoke about his ‘tormenting’ experience with regards to the alleged cow-vigilante was on Tuesday arrested by the Amboli police from Chembur. Bhuyan was arrested from the car of Preeti Sharma Menon Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) spokesperson.
Menon also sparked off a controversy by claiming that inspector Daya Nayak, who was once part of Mumbai elite encounter squad, forced Bhuyan to admit that he had made a false claim about the entire incident.
On August 19, Bhuyan had written in his post that while travelling in an auto-rickshaw in Amboli the driver after looking at his bag inquired if it was made of cow skin, to which he replied that was made of camel skin and that he had bought it at the pushkar fair. The driver then drove the auto-rickshaw to a temple where three other men joined in the debate of cow skin and later Bhuyan was let off.
On August 22, Amboli police registered a case under sections 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation) against unidentified persons. As per the officer, Bhuyan was questioned regarding the evidence which was collected against him by the police and during sustained questioning broke down and admitted to having concocted the entire story of cow-skin harassment.
“Bhuyan was wanted in our case and he was picked up on Tuesday afternoon from Chembur after we had collected strong digital evidence against him. When Bhuyan was nabbed he was found inside the car of AAP leader Preeti Sharma Menon. Kashyap will be produced in court on Wednesday,” said senior police inspector Bharat Gaikwad of Amboli police station. “We will probe into why he did this and whether he was motivated by anyone to create this mischief,” said another police officer.
