NEW DELHI: Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar has sought an early resignation from the Information and Broadcasting before the expiry of his term next February.
According to sources, Sircar has written a letter to I&B Minister M Venkaiah Naidu to this effect.
While Sircar refused to comment, sources told dna that he will leave only after clearing the slot sale policy for Doordarshan by this month end.
Earlier, the I&B Ministry had denied that Sircar was planning to quit, even as he had indicated an early resignation.
Sources said Sircar’s resignation was in the offing given his strained relationship with the I&B ministry. Earlier, Sircar had cited interference of the I&B ministry in the functioning of Prasar Bharati on several instances.
He was reportedly sidelined by the I&B ministry over important decisions such as appointment of director general of DD News Veena Jain. Jain was directly reporting to the I&B ministry without keeping Sircar in the loop, even though she is supposed to report directly to Prasar Bharati.
He was also not involved by the I&B ministry in the launch of DD Kisan, which was supposed to function under Prasar Bharati. Post the launch event, he had written to the I&B ministry, citing their increased interference in Prasar Bharati’s operations.
He was reportedly facing non-cooperation and hurdles from top Doordarshan and All India Radio officials over crucial decisions on Prasar Bharati, especially over matters of revenue generation for the public service broadcaster, which had crippled its functioning in several ways.
A former Culture secretary, Sircar was appointed as the Prasar Bharati CEO by the UPA government in 2012.
