Mamta Kulkarni denies involvement in Rs 2,000-crore drug case

Former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni has denied allegations about her being involved in a Rs 2,000-crore drug racket case. On Friday, her battery of lawyers, screened a videotaped statement, in which she denied all allegations. Earlier this year, Kulkarni and her partner, Vicky Goswami, were named as accused in an alleged drug case busted by the Thane police.

The video statement was released by Kulkarni’s legal advisors, including Parvez Memon of MZM Legal, Daniel Arshack from New York, Cliff Ombeta from Kenya, Sudeep Pasbola and Majeed Memon, at a press briefing here.

Kulkarni, in her videotaped statement, said: “For the past 20 years, I am walking on the path of spirituality. I am a ‘yogini’ now, but all of this is costing my reputation. I am being framed because of my close proximity with a certain person.”

Alleging that the Thane police had seized her properties, she said: “The Thane police is hell-bent on implicating me without evidences. My properties, too, have been seized and I am being implicated in a Rs 2,000-crore drug racket, when I just have Rs 25 lakh in my account and fixed deposits of about Rs 30 lakh.”

She has written a letter to minister of state for home affairs Kiren Rijiju to and unearth the reasons behind her being dragged into the case.

“One of the persons arrested in the case, Jai Mukhi, has already retracted his confession. His confession is such that it would not even reach the trial stage and Kulkarni is being dragged into this case only on the basis of his statement and not on the basis of any evidence against her,” advocate Memon said.

Speaking about the reason why Kulkarni was dragged in by the Thane police and the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Arshack said: “The DEA has a strong interest in Kulkarni as she is a friend of Vicky Goswami.

It is a conspiracy to pressurise Goswami, bring him to the US and charge him with Kulkarni’s help. There is no evidence against Kulkarni. In Gujarat, a similar case was registered but we have not received information about it.”

As per police sources, the transactions pertaining to the drug deal happened in a Kenya-based hotel. However, Ombeta, a Kenyan lawyer hired by Kulkarni, said: “We checked the CCTV footage of the Blitz Hotel in Kenya but couldn’t spot her. We also inquired with the hotel staff and management, who, too, denied Kulkarni’s presence.”

Clarifying on the queries of Kulkarni’s relationship with Goswami, Ombeta said: “Mamta is not only my client but also a friend. I can assure you that the only relationship she has with Goswami is that of friendship.”
