A few seasons back, the runway was dominated by nude makeup, then came the gothic look and this season seems to be all about sparkling lips.
At the recently concluded fashion week in Mumbai, we witnessed this burgeoning trend taking shape. Designer Tarun Tahiliani’s show featured models who were clad in a boho-chic attire with glitter lips finishing the look.
Natasha Nischol, who did makeup for Tahiliani’s show, went for deep oxblood lip colour, pepping it up with the glitterati effect. “I think glossy and matte lips have been around for so long, they have been overdone as well. It was a much needed change and long overdue. Also, it was an opening show of the season, what could have been a bolder statement,” says Nischol.
During the Atelier Versace show in July, American model Bella Hadid strode down the runway and her immaculate shimmering wine-red lips became an instant hit. Maison Margiela’s show also featured models who were exhibiting the glitter-strewn lips. And soon, the sparkle-pressed lips began making a bold statement — it became a raging trend on Instagram and Facebook. A few seasons back, designer Namrata Joshipura also opted for this trend.

At the MTV VMAs, even English model Naomi Campbell donned a playful red lip with swathes of glitter over it. To get this look right, beauty expert Ishika Taneja suggests one can do it at home too. “Apply your favourite shade of lipstick and then use a glitter-filled gloss over it,” she explains. You can also use loose glitter atop your lips and remove the excess with a blotting paper.
