This festival celebrates contemporary arts and dance

Nikita Saxena,New Delhi: Contemporary dance lovers, rejoice because back to the Capital is Interface 2016, the International Festival of Alternative

and Contemporary Expressions. Started in 2002 by Sapphire Creations, the festival is a celebration of contemporary arts and dance.
Sudarshan Chakravorty, festival director, says, “The festival is a two-day affair, with performances by Khambatta Dance Company, USA which will be choreographed by Cyrus Khambatta and Damansara Performing Arts Centre (DPAC), Malaysia which are choreographed by J S Wong.”
Chakravorty shares that the idea behind starting Interface was to provide a platform not just to contemporary dance but also to audiences that enjoy it. He adds, “This year, there will be a mix of this dance from USA and Malaysia. The Asian context of contemporary dance is very different from its American counterpart in the way that the narratives, vocabulary, the perspective is much closer to the Asian bent of mind. Watching both will be interesting for the audience.”Wong, whose composition revolves around darkness and fear, says that he draws inspiration from his childhood. He shares, “My piece, After Dark is heavily inspired by my childhood. I used to live in a rural area where there was no electricity, so darkness is something I have lived with. The props are straw mats and kerosene lights, which are also borrowed from my childhood days. The idea is to explore the fear that humans experience when they are in the dark.” The exploration of the fear, he says, will be through the straw mats which “can transform into any shape, become everything or nothing, and are a metaphor for darkness.”Catch It Live:
