Fifth career gold for Chen Ruolin

China’s Chen Ruolin shrugged off an inexplicably green Rio diving pool to tie team-mate Wu Minxia’s two-day-old record of five career diving gold medals on Tuesday.

POETRY IN MOTION: Chen Ruolin and Liu Huixia took the 10m Platform gold to extend China's domination of the diving arena.

China’s magnificent divers stayed unbeaten in the Olympics as Chen and Liu Huixia won the women’s 10m synchronised competition, taking China to three-for-three in its bid for an unprecedented eight-event sweep.

It was a three-peat gold in the event for Chen, 23, who won with different partners in Beijing and London. She also won the individual 10m platform in both of those Games but is not entered for Rio.

But much of the attention at the event was directed at the diving well’s bizarre transformation from light-blue the day before to a murky green, the latest embarrassing hiccup for the Rio Games.

However, a venue spokesman said water tests found “no risk whatsoever to athletes’ health.”

France won its first gold through the equestrian team eventing. French hero Astier Nicolas also took a silver in the individual event behind Germany’s Michael Jung.

Khasan Khalmurzaev of Russia maintained his perfect record this year by winning the 81kg judo gold. Khalmurzaev has won all 20 bouts he’s had in 2016, taking his victory streak to 23 in total.

He beat American Travis Stevens in the final with an inner leg throw for a perfect ippon score.
