Assamese alphabets in electronic world
Sivasagar, Prangan Duarah: In this technical world, a growing numbers of software programs and web tools help people to improve their own language and provide an opportunity to write in their preferred language in electronic devices. A majority of people in Assam do not know how to type in their own language. Also, there is little documentation for users to learn about language input. There is a severe lack of user-friendly software available for typing Assamese text. Here I have mentioned some software through which you will be able to write in Assamese on your laptop, desktop or in your smart phones also.
LuitPad is a stand-alone, fully Unicode compliant software designed for rapid typing of Assamese words and characters. There are two main typing options; one which is based on the approximate sound of words and the other based on the sound of characters, both of which are efficient and user-friendly, even for a first-time user. In addition, LuitPad comes with an online spell-checker; on “right-clock” over a misspelt word, presents the user with a list of relevant appropriate corrections for replacements. With LuitPad, the user can retrieve Assamese characters and words using an English alphabet based keyboard in an effective and intuitive way. LuitPad is compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux with a GUI. The software can store the contents in LuitPad file format (“.pad” extension) that can store images and text. In addition, .pad files can be easily exported to pdf and HTML files.
- Lipikkar Lipikaar is a simple method for typing in Assamese on an ordinary keyboard. It requires only some familiarity with the regular English keyboard and encourages the user to think in his/her regional language. It works on all Windows Applications which support Unicode – MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Internet Explorer and others.
- Rodali Rodali is a set of special type of typing tools called Input Method Editor (IME). Using Rodali, the user can write Assamese characters on any application or editor in computers and Android devices. It is a lightweight user-friendly typing tool, designed to serve a wide range of users, starting from novice to professionals. Rodali is a freeware.
- Sabdalippi This keyboard is designed for the Assamese language. It is a phonetic keyboard, which means the characters are arranged according to the letters of the English keyboard. It will help you write in The Assamese language.
