The 17-year-old boy, Mohammed Wajid, was talking on his cellphone when policemen escorting a handcuffed suspect on a Wadala street thought he was taking their pictures and arrested him. Wajid said he was subjected to third-degree torture at the police station, which left him with severe internal injuries to his private parts.
The police booked Wajid under Section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the IPC. They also mentioned his age as 19 years.
Subsequently, an inquiry was ordered by senior police officers. After Wajid’s relatives met senior IPS officer Sanjay Pande of the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission, the officer asked them for related papers, medical documents and Wajid’s age proof. He also asked for the police report.
Wajid was treated at the Sion hospital OPD when he complained of being unable to pass urine but was admitted after complications on April 6. His medical report said he sustained blunt trauma on his abdomen and chest, probably caused by belts and lathis. It also said a toothpick was inserted in his anus. [ Source input:IANS/TOI]
