Guwahati April 4: Hours after the first phase of polling was conducted in Assam on Monday, an IED bomb was planted near a police station in Dudhnoi, Goalpara district which ended up killing 2 persons. At least 12 policemen and 20 civilians have been injured. They have been rushed to hospital immediately. Bomb squad team has arrived on the spot to conduct searches in the vicinity.
According to local reports, the IED bomb was planted in a dustbin. It exploded with great ferocity creating a panic in the area. As of now, the reason behind the attack is not clear. However, it could likely be an act of insurgents, to express their anguish against the ongoing electoral process in the state.
Interestingly, the site in Dudhnoi which was chosen for the attack is quite near to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) district office. Assam ADGP has assured that swift action would be taken in the case. However, the utmost priority of the security forces is to ensure that the number of casualties do not rise. “Explosive was inside a dust bin. Injured are being taken to the Government Hospital in the area,” said ADGP K V Singh Deo.
Assam witnessed the first round of polls on Monday. Across 65 constituencies, 70 per cent of the electorates came out to cast their mandate. The second phase of polling would be conducted on April 11.
