Boat Capsized in Hirakud Resrvoir, 20 Killed

Odisha, February 10, Abhijit Saha: At least 20 people are reportedly killed till now as boat capsized in the Hirakud reservoir of Odisha’s Sambalpur district on Sunday. The boat was carrying more than 100 people of which some of them have been rescued but several others are missing in this mishap.

Odisha, February 10, Abhijit Saha: It is known from the sources that the capacity of the boat is 70 and also it lacks safety measures like life jackets. The boat has capsized because of overloading.

The chief minister of Odisha, who is in New Delhi right now expressed his pain for the incident and instructed the administration to start the rescue operation and announced free treatment for the survivors.

In the rescue operation Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), police, fire brigade and some local drivers are also engaged. This incident took place when people are returning from the other side of the reservoir for a picnic. Special relief commissioner Mr. P K Mohapatra said that the rescue operation was continue during the night with the help of flash lights.

To discuss the matter with the district administration, Revenue Minister S N Patrao and Finance Minister Prasanna Acharya will also make aerial survey of the rescue operation. Rahul Gandhi will also visit the place today to meet with the relatives of the sufferers.

Sufferers are being taken to district Headquarters Hospital in Sambalpur and VSS Medical College Hospital at Burla. The Chief Minister has also announced a compensation package of Rs. 1.5 Lacs to the families of the victims.
