Easter: The holy Sunday

Shillong, Prangan Duarah: With about 2.2 billion believers Christianity, which is based on the teachings of Jesus Christ who lived in the Holy Land 2,000 years ago, is the world’s biggest religion. They trust in justification by faith – that through their belief in Jesus as the Son of God, and in his death and resurrection, they can have a right relationship with God whose forgiveness was made once and for all through the death of Jesus Christ. Every religion has its own tradition and festival. Among various festival of Christian religion “Easter” is one of the most religious and important festival for Christian people which is celebrated for the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the death. It is considered as the most well-attended Sunday and the holiest Sunday service of the year for Christian churches.

In Western Christianity, in which Gregorian calendar is used, Easter always celebrates on a Sunday between 22 March and 25 April inclusive, within about seven days after the astronomical full moon. But Eastern Christianity use Julian calendar instead of Gregorian calendar therefore Easter varies between 4 April and 8 May on the Gregorian calendar. The week before Easter is called Holy week which includes Maundy Thursday, commemorating the Maundy and Last Supper and also Good Friday. Easter is celebrated at the end of this holy week. It is believed that Jesus had his last meal with his disciples on the evening of a Thursday, which is commemorated as Holy Thursday, was arrested during the night, and tried Friday morning, condemned, crucified, and died before sundown on Friday. This Friday is a Christian religious holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. This Friday is known as “Good Friday”. And after his death on this holy Friday it is believed that Jesus was bodily raised from the dead on the third day — Sunday, which is celebrated as Ester Sunday.

Churches are filled with candles and flowers on the day of Easter Sunday. They believe that candles help them to remember that Jesus is the light of the world and that when he rose to life on Easter Day he got rid of the darkness of evil and the flowers represent new life. Generally Churches start the Easter Sunday celebrations at Midnight on Easter Eve. In some churches, the service starts in darkness. Then twelve candles are lit and these are taken round the rest of the church lighting the other candles. When a candle is lit the Priest says ‘Christ is risen!’ and the congregation respond ‘He is Risen Indeed! Today world celebrates Easter Sunday of 2016. May Jesus Christ bless this world with peace and love in this holy occasion.
