New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha on Thursday witnessed uproar as the opposition MPs protested over Sri Sri Ravishakar’s controversial Wolrd Cultural Festival.
Janta Dal leader Sharad Yadav raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha.
The opposition demanded answers from government on why the army was roped in for a private function.
“How can Indian Army assist in erecting pantoon bridges for a private event. How can Army be used for a private function, government ows an explanation on this,” said CPM leader Sitaram Yechuri.
Congress leader in Rajya Sbha Gulam Nabi Azal aslo questioned Army’s assistance in Art of Living’s event.
However, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the event is being held adhering to all rules and laws.
“National Green Tribunal is hearing the matter as we discuss the issue here. The event is being held adhering to all rules and laws. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is committed towards protecting environment. It would be wrong to doubt his commitment towards nature,” Naqvi said.
The opposition members strted protesting in the well of Rajya Sabha shouting slogans, “Dont misue the Army, save the Army.”
Amid all the controversies that have surrounded Art of Living’s extravaganza, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has appealed all the parties not to politicise the event.
“I appeal to all parties to not politicize the World Cultural Festival. It is to unite all cultures, nations, religions & ideologies. Let’s come together!,” he tweeted.
