High Court raps civic bodies for lack of women’s loos

Guwahati: Criticizing Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) for not installing enough public toilets for women in the city, Gauhati high court has asked both agencies to furnish details of functioning public toilets available for women within four weeks. Two city-based professionals, SM Kachari and Nitali Sarmah, had filed a PIL with the high court in 2013, seeking adequate and separate public toilets for women in Guwahati.

An RTI showed that GMC and GMDA had installed public toilets in 12 locations in the city, but none was exclusively for women.

Advocate Rajeev Kalita, counsel of the petitioners, said, “The high court expressed displeasure over the fact that very few women-only toilets have been constructed in the last eight years.”

The court will hear the matter again on March 21.
