Meghalaya Govt. seeking CRPF agencies to tackle militancy

SHILLONG, February 7, R M Warjri:  Taking counter offensive measures to tackle militancy in certain parts of the state. The Meghalaya government has sought for additional four companies of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to be deployed in the militant-infested areas of Garo Hills region and parts of West Khasi Hills region.

With the increase in militancy activities taking place in different parts of Garo Hills and West Khasi Hills. The state government justified for the demand from the centre.

At present, only one company has been deputed by the centre to the state in the Shallang coal belt areas of West Khasi Hills.

A state official on condition of anonymity informed here, that other three companies of CRPF would arriving soon in the state and will be deployed in the Garo Hills region. The official also stated that an offer has been extended to the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) for an open dialogue and the response is yet to come from the outfit based in Garo Hills.

The state government is also planning to set-up a permanent security camp in East Garo Hills District. At the same time anti-insurgency operations have been intensified in the region towards neutralizing militants, the official added.
