A shocking video of Delhi Police ruthlessly beating up students during a recent rally in support of Hyderabad student Rohith Vemula has gone viral on social media.
The video shows men in uniform and civil dress mercilessly beating students, dragging them by their hair and slamming them to the ground.
According to reports, the incident took place at Jhandewalan area in central Delhi. The video shows that even women were not spared.
The students are seen raising slogans of ‘Delhi Police murdabad’, ‘Delhi Police Sharam Karo’.
“We were stopped at the barricade and policemen asked us to use another road. Suddenly, a group of men appeared out of nowhere and started thrashing us mercilessly,” reported NDTV, quoting a protester.
The report also said that the police has asked protesters to file a complaint and that the matter will be investigated.
Lashing out over the video, AAP Delhi convener Dilip Pandey tweeted, “What a new low in Indian politics. Male cops beaten up female protesters, RSS workers too joined DP in this brutality (sic).”
However, speaking to CNN-IBN, Delhi Police DCP claimed that the protestors had broken barricades and thrown sticks, charging at the cops.
