ammu and Kashmir: Mehbooba Mufti to chair first formal PDP meet, to discuss govt formation

JAMMU: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s daughter Mehbooba Mufti will hold a meeting with senior party leaders on Sunday on government formation in the state.

Following the death of Sayeed, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had said it will review the implementation of its Agenda of Alliance — entered with the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir — during the term of the coalition government headed by the PDP founder before making a decision on fresh government formation. The PDP has 28 ministers in the state assembly and needs 16 members to form the government. The state is under the governor’s rule.

According to The Hindustan Times report, Mufti will discuss her father’s agenda of peace and development today. “We will discuss the agenda of peace and development set for the party by the late chief minister,” party spokesman Nayeem Akhtar said while adding that the party has authorised Mufti to decide on government. Mufti will meet with party legislators, provincial presidents, district presidents and zonal presidents of Kashmir province at her Fairview residence.

He, however, refused to comment on whether the party will take a decision on the matter today. “She is yet to speak about government formation to party members,” he said.

The BJP is hopeful that the meeting will bring out a decision on government formation. “We hope something concrete comes out of Sunday’s meeting. PDP has to take a call, we are in no hurry,” said BJP’s Dr Nirmal Singh to the daily.

Some of the PDP’s demands are to remove AFSPA from the state, holding a dialogue with separatists and giving Centre owned projects to the state.
