No more moral policing? Cops to scrap public indecency section from Bombay Police Act

Mumbai police harassing couples has become quite a cultural meme but not anymore. According to a report in Mid Day, the cops will no longer use Section 110 (public indecency) of the Bombay Police Act 1951. The act has been used time and again to harass couples. In one such case, the cops had detained 40 couples from hotels at Madh Island and Aksa.

Moral Policing

The decision to refrain from using Sec 110 was taken at a high-level police meet last week. At the meeting, Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Deven Bharti also passed the order asking the police to stop arresting people under Section 151 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), which allows an officer to arrest a citizen – without a warrant or a Magistrate’s order.
