Creative midfielder Taisuke Matsugae scored a brilliant goal in stoppage time to help Mumbai FC…
It’s going from bad to worse for Mumbai City FC. Days after going to 7-0 to FC Goa in their last outing, Mumbai City FC suffered yet another defeat, this time at the hands of NorthEast United FC, who registered a comfortable 2-0 victory. For the record, Mumbai City FC haven’t won in any of their previous five games, and now lie sixth on the points table.
Goals from Bruno Arias and Diomansy Kamara in the 41st and 87th minutes, respectively, were enough for the hosts to bag the victory and jump to fourth in the points table.
NEUFC headed into the game on the back of a 1-4 loss to Kerala Blasters FC, which prompted head coach Cesar Farias to make seven changes in the starting line-up. Mumbai’s player-manager Nicolas Anelka made four changes to the team after its embarrassing defeat to Goa.
Mumbai started on a positive note, coming out with intent. Saran Singh tested NEUFC goalkeeper TP Rehenesh as early as the first minute, with a thunderous volley on target but the goalie was not troubled as the ball came to him at a perfect height. Mumbai continued to dominate the first 15 minutes, but gradually began to fizzle out.
NEUFC’s patience paid off towards the end of the first half when Kamara was brought down in the box by Rowlinson Rodrigues and the referee deemed the offence bookable and awarded a penalty. Arias stepped up to the spot and coolly slotted the ball past Mumbai City FC goalkeeper Subrata Paul.
Both sides began the second half with a bit of caution. Sony Norde, back with the Mumbai squad after returning from international duty, was brought into play in the second half by Anelka. His pass to Anelka in the 80th minute was put away towards goal perfectly but Rehenesh pulled off a brilliant safe to deny the Mumbai skipper from point-blank range.
For the hosts, second half substitutes Nicolas Velez and Simao added spark to their attack, and it showed. Simao sent a brilliant free-kick that drew Subrata out of his line but the goalkeeper, caught in a mix with Kamara and his defenders, spilled the ball for Kamara to simply tap into an empty net.
