New Delhi: Almost two weeks after the Supreme Court had advised the government to put import of human embryos on hold citing India had become an international hub for commercial surrogacy.
According to reports, the Modi government has decided to make commercial surrogacy illegal. It has made its stance clear in an affidavit submitted in the Supreme Court,
In the affidavit, the government has made it clear that exceptions will be considered only in the cases of infertile married Indian couple. Reports suggest that even in those cases competent authority will check if the request is genuine. The government has also decided to take strict action against commercial surrogacy services.
With the government taking a firm stand, there would be no more import of embryo for surrogacy purpose.
