On Thursday he was supposed to get admitted in Nagpada and his leave was not approved. He woke up in the morning to arrange his blood reports, but said he wanted to go out and went downstairs. Then we heard noise and someone from our family went down. It was then that we realised he had set himself ablaze. We rushed him to Thane civil hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead.”

Kaustub Mane (name changed), a neighbour, said, “In the morning a woman noticed him going behind the building with a bottle in his hand. Soon, he set himself afire. We alerted the family. His body was charred. Even a nearby coconut tree sustained burns. His son identified his body and we helped the family take him to Thane civil hospital. He had no household tensions or family problems. He was supposed to retire after a year and a half. He suffered 98% burns.”

A police official from Kopri police station said, “We had just come to know that Sawant was ill and was in tension.

We will take the family’s statement and have registered an ADR. Further investigation is on. The deceased left no suicide note.”
