Kozhikode, 27 March, Sreeparvathy K.: P Ramdas, the director of the first neo- realistic film in Malayalam passed away at the age of 85 on Thursday due to age- related ailments. The film ‘Newspaper Boy’ was directed by Ramdas at the age of 21 with the support of a group of students of the Adarsh Kalamandir.
The film acclaimed international fame as the first feature film made by a group of students. The film was released in 1955 gaining its inspiration from the Italian neorealist and world film industry at that time. The film paved the way for the new age of social reality in the Malayalam cinema which was revolving around mythological and historical characters.
Ramdas was under treatment in a private hospital at Kottayam. He had also directed a couple of Malayalam films like ‘Niramala’ and ‘Vatakaveetile Athithi’. He was conferred JC Daniel award in 2007 by the state government.
